Spotlights On. Volume Up. Energy Unleashed.

A Conversation With Giles R. Goveas – Founder & Drummer, Royal Midnight Groove | Toronto’s Versatile Live Entertainment Band

“When we kicked off in September 2023 with our first gig, none of us expected the ride that followed,” Giles says with a grin. “Toronto welcomed us louder than we imagined.”

In just two years, Royal Midnight Groove (RMG) has become known for high-energy shows, genre-blending sets, and a chemistry that keeps crowds locked in. “We love mixing it up—pop, rock, 80s, 90s, even some country. We don’t like predictable,” he adds. “If people are on their feet, we’ve done our job.”

A Fusion of Styles and Influences

From Giles’ perspective, Royal Midnight Groove is more than a band —it is a powerhouse made up of seasoned musicians whose chemistry was built long before the band officially formed. Along with him, the lineup features Brian Lobo (Keys), Gratiano Goveas (Guitar), Larissa Lobo (Vocals), and Jerson Anthony (Bass).

When choosing the name Royal Midnight Groove, Giles wanted something that captured the vision shaped by his 20 years of industry experience—a vision of building a band with the best of the best. The concept of a “royal flush” resonated with him: a winning hand, a moment where everything aligns. That idea became the foundation of the name, representing a commitment to show up with their strongest lineup, their fullest energy, and their absolute best—every performance, every set, every night. This “best hand” mentality has become RMG’s core ethos: bold, spontaneous, and grounded in true musical craftsmanship.

Every musician plays a defining role in shaping that signature RMG experience. Larissa’s dynamic vocals and magnetic stage presence set the tone; Brian’s expressive keys add warmth, texture, and richness; Gratiano’s guitar work brings soul, grit, and power; and Jerson’s steady bass lines anchor the groove. As for Giles, he drives the heartbeat of the band—locking everyone in with precision, energy, and rhythm that lifts the entire performance.

For RMG, performing isn’t just about playing songs—it’s about feeling them. Their deep connection to the music and to each other fuels performances that are energetic, spontaneous, and unforgettable. RMG thrives on engaging with the crowd at every show, taking live requests and creating moments that make each performance feel personal and interactive. Whether it’s a pub night, private event, or corporate show, they bring unmatched passion to the stage, ensuring every audience feels the groove from the very first note.

The Magic of Live Shows

When the conversation turns to live performances, Giles lights up—because for him, that’s where the true essence of RMG comes alive. He explains that the band’s powerful chemistry is the result of years of playing together, long before RMG officially formed. With more than 30 shows under their belt, their energy hasn’t dipped for a moment; if anything, it’s only grown stronger.

Giles talks about how the band thrives on spontaneity, trusting each other to lead, pivot, and elevate the moment as it unfolds. Every show feels slightly different, shaped by the crowd, the room, and the energy in the air. As he puts it, every performance is “a bit of an experiment”—one they fully embrace.

This ability to feed off the audience and welcome the unexpected is what makes an RMG show engaging. Whether they’re performing on a big festival stage or in an intimate venue, the band brings a live experience that feels electric, organic, and unmistakably their own.

Collaboration, Commitment and Creativity

When asked about what truly shapes RMG’s musical identity, Giles points immediately to their spirit of collaboration—both within the band and with the artists they invite into their world. Drawing from his own professional experience performing with a wide range of musicians over the years, he explains that he has always been open to creative partnerships. Those experiences taught him the power of blending perspectives, letting other musicians bring their colors into the mix, and allowing the music to evolve naturally.

Whether it’s sharing the stage with guest performers, mixing genres, or sparking spontaneous jam sessions, RMG thrives on musical synergy. Unlike many bands, they don’t depend heavily on rehearsals. Their years of playing together have created an intuitive understanding of each other’s styles, allowing them to improvise freely, adapt on the spot, and make room for fresh ideas and new voices.

This trust, among the members and with their collaborators is what keeps every RMG performance dynamic and unpredictable. Once the music starts, they lock in effortlessly, channeling the groove, reading the energy of the room, and letting the moment shape the direction of the show. It’s a living, evolving form of expression that audiences connect with instantly.

Above everything, Giles emphasizes how deeply RMG values their fans and business partners. The promise is simple: show up with full energy, full intention, and full heart—every single time. Every performance should matter, and RMG is committed to making sure it always does.

Looking Ahead: What’s Next for RMG?

2023 and 2024 were about setting the pace — establishing a strong presence, building chemistry, and laying the foundation for what was to come. During this time, Royal Midnight Groove honed their sound, tightened their performances, and steadily grew their fanbase across Toronto’s live music scene, performing at a variety of pubs, bars, and community venues including Knight’s Corner, Elevate Lounge, La Gabbia, Fionn MacCool’s, Local Public Eatery, The Irish Shebeen Pub, KCR Bar & Grill, The Goan Overseas Association, and Barrel & Bites.

Looking back, Giles describes 2025 as the year RMG decided to go “bigger and bolder.” Their performances at the Beaches Jazz Festival, Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, the Markham District Veterans Association, and the City of Pickering marked a turning point—proof that the band was ready to step into larger arenas, both literally and creatively. He reflects on these milestones as moments that not only boost the band’s visibility but also strengthened their commitment to reaching diverse audiences with music that moves, energizes, and brings people together.

As their following continues to grow, RMG is already setting its sights on a bigger 2026—aiming for larger venues, broader audiences, and bold new collaborations while continuing to shape and refine their dynamic sound. Giles’ vision for the band has always been clear: to keep pushing limits, chasing bigger goals, and building something that lasts. As he said during our conversation, “I’ll sleep when I’m dead,” a mindset that reflects his relentless drive and the band’s commitment to constant evolution. For RMG, every performance is another opportunity—to connect, to grow, and to keep doing what they love most.
