A Path Toward Connection: A Conversation with Revered Dave Ward

In the landscape of Canadian music, where storytelling and melody often intertwine to reflect the country’s cultural depth, musician Dave Ward stands as a quiet but resonant force. His work has long carried a sensitivity to human experience—an instinct for shaping sound into something that feels lived, felt, and deeply considered. That sensibility found a powerful new expression in his recent collaboration with acclaimed Canadian songwriter Mosi Dorbayani, a creator known for not only coining the term, but also crafting award-wining ‘Message Songs’ that speak to conscience as much as emotion.

Their joint creation, A Bridge of Light, arrives at a moment when audiences are seeking not just entertainment, but meaning—something that acknowledges the fractures of the world while offering a path toward connection. Ward’s melody does exactly that. It carries the architecture of hope: motifs that rise like dawn, harmonies that feel like hands extended across distance, and a structure that invites listeners to imagine what unity might sound like if translated into music.

This collaboration is more than a meeting of two Canadian artists; it is a convergence of philosophies. Dorbayani’s lyrical vision—rooted in humanitarian themes and his established tradition of Message Songs—meets Ward’s instinct for emotional clarity and sonic storytelling. Together, they have shaped a piece that feels both intimate and universal, personal yet expansive.

Today, we step into the creative world behind A Bridge of Light through the eyes of its melody composer. In conversation with revered Dave Ward, we explore the inspirations that guided him, the dynamics of working with a songwriter of Mosi’s calibre, and the deeper intentions woven into the music’s luminous frame.

Mr. Ward, welcome to Spotlight Magazine.

DW: Thank you.

What emotional or artistic spark first drew you toward composing a melody for ‘A Bridge of Light’, and how did that initial impulse evolve as the piece took shape?

DW: First, I want to say that I’ve known Mosi for several years now. We met once face-to-face over a zoom call and ended up having a long, memorable conversation about the music industry. Since then, even with the time difference between us here in Canada, technology has made it easy for us to stay connected online.

Second, I was honoured when Mosi asked me to write a melody for these beautiful lyrics. The first verse struck an immediate “chord”, and I realized it would be both a pleasure and a challenge to write a melody for what Mosi had written.

Kris Kristofferson once wrote, “Most of us hate anything we don’t understand”. Sadly, many people simply lack respect for anything other than what they know themselves, and that often results in friction and conflict. The lyrics for the first verse just seemed to inspire something gentle and soft to lay the foundation of what was to come. But I also felt it would require a change of tone through the chorus to strongly convey the overall message.

Working with Mosi Dorbayani—whose Message Songs carry philosophical and humanitarian weight—how did the collaboration influence your own compositional choices or challenge you creatively?

DW: As I mentioned, I have known Mosi for quite some time and have always been impressed with his talent to not only compose but to write meaningful lyrics with substance. When we look at these lyrics, we see they open by painting a picture of “Differences” and then in the Pre-Chorus and Chorus introduce the two key words “Understanding” and “Tolerance”. “Differences”, “Understanding” and “Tolerance” just seem to jump out and inspired the feel for the different parts of the overall melody.

Message Songs occupy a unique space in contemporary music. What responsibilities or opportunities do you feel they carry, and how did that awareness shape your approach to this project?

DW: I believe that Message Songs have three major responsibilities. First, the lyrics need to effectively convey the message. These lyrics certainly did that. Second, they need to attract the listener’s ear. Last, but not least, they need to go beyond “preaching to the converted”, and hopefully plant seeds in the hearts of people who might benefit from their influence. Of course, the song should also provide positive reinforcement for those that already share the values expressed within the song and even inspire them to share it with others.

As far as this song goes, the melody had to breathe life into the lyrics and, hopefully, accomplish what is outlined above.

The title A Bridge of Light evokes imagery of connection, hope, and transcendence. How did you translate those themes into musical motifs, or structural decisions within the melody composition?

DW: I felt that ‘A Bridge of Light’ needed a soft and warm introduction to gently plant the seeds for the main message in the song. I tried to increase the intensity as it transcended from the first verse and into the chorus to better reinforce the message of positive change. But, it’s very much a feel process, by first being fully engaged by the lyrics and message and then creating a marriage between those lyrics and melodies that embrace and support the overall mood.

When listeners encounter A Bridge of Light, what do you hope they carry with them—emotionally, socially, or spiritually—after the final note fades?

DW: In this fast-paced world full of distractions, I just hope people will take the time to listen to the entire song. From there, I hope it will reinforce the values of respect, recognition and acceptance for those that already believe in the message in these lyrics. Of course, as I mentioned above, I hope it reaches and softens other hearts out there as well, and causes them to stop and think about things a little differently.

Thank you for doing this interview with us.

DW: My pleasure, thank you for having me.
